Letter frequency that actually helps

English has well-known overall letter frequencies; five-letter game words skew them slightly. Learn the high-value letters and when to stop leaning on them.

The usual suspects: E, A, R, O, T, L, I, S, N

Corpus studies on common five-letter word lists show E and A near the top, followed by R, O, T, L, I, S, and N in slightly varying order. These letters appear in a large share of solutions, which is why starters like SLATE and CRATE feel powerful—they light up grays and yellows fast.

Frequency versus position

A letter can be common overall but rare in slot five (think S) or love the ends (-ING, -ED, -LY families). After your first guess, stop thinking only globally: use yellows to test alternate positions before you trust a letter is fully absent.

Consonant clusters you should respect

Pairs like CH, ST, TR, CR, and BL appear often at word edges. If your feedback supports a cluster, try words that move the cluster across positions instead of scattering random singleton consonants.

When frequency misleads

Obscure or themed answers can ignore the top-ten chart. If adaptive difficulty pushes you into less common vocabulary, expect more J, V, Z, or Q than a casual Wordle clone. Treat frequency as a prior, not a rule—update beliefs after every row.

FAQ

Should I memorize a full frequency chart?

Memorizing exact percentages is optional. Internalizing the top eight letters plus a feel for common pairs is enough for daily play.

Do plurals ruin S-frequency advice?

Many games allow plurals; some curated lists avoid them. If plurals are legal, S stays valuable late-slot testing. If not, weight S slightly lower in your mental model.

How does this interact with combo multipliers?

Frequency helps you reach confident placements sooner. Earlier structural certainty makes it easier to stack consecutive greens—the core of combo-based scoring.

Are keyboard heatmaps accurate?

Heatmaps based on general English differ from curated answer lists. Use them as intuition builders, then calibrate to whatever difficulty band the game keeps feeding you.
